How assessment
is done
As Atkins explained it, the County Board of Supervisors (BOS) solicits bids from private companies that do this sort of large scale assessment, and appoints a Board of Assessors to oversee the process. The BOS hires and pays the assessor' Our BOS solicited bids earlier in the year, and Blue Ridge Mass Appraisal, out of Staunton, VA, won the contract. They happen to be the same company that performed the 2002 assessment.
The actual work of the reassessment is a three man task. Project Manager Mike Didawick of Blue Ridge Mass Appraisal and two employees are going around the whole county, assessing every single house. They don’t go inside, just drive by and have a look, checking for dramatic changes- additions, and so forth. It amounts to a kind of spot check, followed by a detailed look at current trends in the sale price, of surrounding developed and undeveloped land.
