in Clark Hollow, and was an only child. His attitude toward money, and what you spent it for, were tempered by the sparse environment that was his lifestyle during his developmental years and, of course, by the harshness created by the great depression. For the purposes of this column, it will suffice to say he was thrifty.
I realize that those of you who knew him may smile when you read that, for I have heard it said that the buffalo would blink at the light when Dad took a nickel from his pocket.
Nevertheless, he was a good father and a good provider of the things we needed. And when we visited the orchards of Mr. Moore or Mr. Lee, Dad would buy a bushel or two of ‘good’ apples, but he always asked about picking some up off the ground. These apples were considerably less expensive than the ones that had been picked and packed by the orchard.
