Next, the Circuit Court will appoint a Board of Equalization of Real Estate Assessments (BOE). Our circuit includes Rappahannock, Fauquier and Loudoun counties, and the presiding judge is the Honorable James H. Chamblin. The BOE must have three to five members, must be generally representative of the community, and 30 percent must be real estate professionals of some sort.
The BOE can address both mistakes and the whether your assessment is in line with others nearby. By state law, they must hold and finish hearings before next August, but in practice, it will be much sooner. As with the BOA, notice will be made in the paper, at the library and at the courthouse.
For both these avenues of appeal, contact the office of the Commissioner of the Revenue: 675-5370. If you dispute the ruling of the BOE, you may appeal to the Circuit Court as your final recourse.
Assessment and
