“Mad Hot Ballroom” is a documentary that follows several teams of preadolescent student dancers from New York City schools as they train for the competition that caps the American Ballroom Theater’s “Dancing Classrooms” program of ballroom dance instruction. Sure to sweep you off your feet, this enormously entertaining film is an inspiring look at ballroom dancing and cultural diversity and shows us that the essence of ballroom dance not only lies in formal steps of the feet, but just as much in the heart. “Mad Hot Ballroom” is showing at The Theatre in Washington, VA., Friday, November 4, 8:00 p.m.
The 10-week ballroom dancing course for sixth-grade students was launched in the New York City school system in 1994. Tbday, more than 6,000 students participate in the course, which culminates in a citywide competition. Marilyn Agrelo’s documentary, inspired by an article written by her collaborator, Amy Sewell, follows three groups of students from classroom to competition. The focus is on posh Tribeca, tough Bensonhurst and low-income Washington Heights.
