about cutting cress over there, and he would say that when we came out, Mr. Bowling would be standing there at the house, and he would say to Dad, “Moffett, the next time that fellow of yours comes down the road with the motor grader, have him job in the bank over there on Willy’s (Gentry) side a little bit.”
Dad was in charge of the road work in the county, back then, and, I suppose, Mr. Bowling didn’t want the road widened or the ditches cleaned, if it meant taking material from his side of the road.
That was a long time ago. The cress I eat now come from my garden, when I can get it to come up, or from my brother-in-law’s garden, where it seems to grow really well. Cress, being a broadleaf plant, I suspect, does not fare well in the cornfields that have been treated with chemicals to kill broadleaf plants.
