The guilty plea came as the result of a plea agreement between Edward’s attorney Huntley Thorpe and Peter Luke, in which Luke agreed not to seek a mandatory minimum sentence of five years. While Edwards could still receive a sentence of up to eleven years in prison, the plea agreement puts his sentencing in the hands of Judge H. Dudley Payne. In addition to probable jail time, Edwards will have to register as a sex offender and pay in excess of $3,000 in restitution for a victim’s counseling expenses.
According to Waymond James Edwards Sr, the defendant’s father, his son opted not to contest the charges to avoid a potentially worse sentence.
“We did what we think is best. While I don’t think the facts were represented as they occurred, with him being a coach and them underage, and his word against theirs, we wanted to avoid a worse sentencing event,” explained the senior Edwards.
