and get their view The BOS moved to allocate $28,000 toward the project. This amounts to a declaration of willingness to appropriate funds from the county budget to pay if by mischance the school is caught short next year when the bills come due. The School Board subsequently voted to accept the Lantz bid and proceed with construction in a special meeting Tuesday evening.

Managing emergencies

At the recommendation of the Rappahannock County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association, the BOS voted to adopt the National Incident Managing System (NIMS). NIMS is a standardized and integrated set of protocols for dealing with emergencies, designed to enable state, local and federal emergency responders to work together with universal procedures and terminology. Detailed information on NIMS can be found at: http://www. fema.gov/txt/nims/ with a succinct, general explanation at http 7/www. fe ma. go v/txt/nimsfrums_ic8_ position_ paper.txt.

Road signs

Regional Virginia Department of Transportation representative David Cubbage answered questions about the final version of the county’s six year road plan. The plan outlines repairs, maintenance and improvements scheduled from 2006 to 2012. Supervisor Bryant Lee said he had received complaints about the recent posting of a sign for Griffin Tavern on US 211 and asked Cubbage what could be done to control the posting of business signs by VDOT. “If every business had a sign, you wouldn’t be able to see the view,” observed Lee.

Cubbage responded: “If they pay the fee, we will put the sign up. The best think is to ask the business not to pay the fee.” In defense of Cubbage, McCarthy elaborated that the signs are part of a state program and not under the control of the local VDOT representative to control. If a business pays the fee, VDOT will put up a sign, so in essence, the only check on their proliferation is social pressure on business owners.
