sneaking
up on a bear
As I approached the area where the coyote had been when I took the shot, I could see nothing. No bear, no coyote, no evidence of a hit. But, I knew the bear was still in the area, because I had watched the other side of the thicket adjoining the gully, and he had not emerged.
I eased further into the thicket. And, there he was, gorging himself on autumn olives. There were several large olive bushes, and he was standing up, leaning into them, feeding, just as unconcerned as he could be.
Bears, for all their abilities, do not possess the best eyesight. They have extraordinary senses of smell and hearing, but they just don’t see that well, compared to deer or turkeys. I wanted to see how big he really was. I eased to within about 30 yards. He was a nice, slick, healthy looking bear, and as black as coal. I would guess his live weight to be about 250 pounds, maybe a tad more.
