A.P., Sara, and Maybelle Carter, the musical ‘Carter Family’ of southwest Virginia left a legacy that continues to have a profound influence on country, folk, and acoustic music traditions. Their reach is so pronounced that they might almost be described as the Beatles of their era. Consider just one aspect of their legacy: June, one of Maybelle’s daughters not only performed with the ‘Family’ but went on become the wife and musical partner of country music legend Johnny Cash.
The Carter’s came to musical prominence in the late 1920s, a time when hardship was very real in the midst of the Great Depression. Then as now, popular culture reflected the sense of the times. Radio was in its infancy. Everyone listened to that era’s new technology and among the most widely heard programs were those featuring the Carters. And, in keeping with the national mood, their best-known songs dealt with human tragedy and bittersweet, at best, tales of 16ve. Even today titles like “Will the Circle be Unbroken” and “Wildwood Flower” are instantly recognizable and typical of their work.
