LAYING SOLDIERS
TO REST Located in nearly every state as well as in foreign countries, military cemeteries were created for the burial of war casualties, veterans, and their dependents. During the American Revolutions, soldiers were interred in existing burial ground near the place of the battle. During the Civil War, owing to a critical shortage of cemetery space, lots were acquire near hospitals, where more soldiers died than on the battlefield. When the inadequacy of this strategy became apparent. Congress passed legislation on 1862 authorizing the creation of a national cemetery system. Within the year, 14 national cemeteries were created. Following World War I, 8 permanent American cemeteries were established in Europe. Fourteen were created in foreign countries after World War II.
