The AA Brentsville Tigers topped the A Rappahannock Panthers in the season opener in Nokesville last week.
Last year’s Tigers finished in the higher end of the Northwest District, advancing all the way to the first round of regionals. Rappahannock spent all of last winter looking for a win, finishing 0-17, at the bottom rung of the group A Bull Run district.
The Panthers were only able to put 23 points on the board against one of the area’s most successful basketball programs.
“We were a little nervous, and very timid with our shots,” Rappahannock coach Rhonda Jenkins said. “We had too many turnovers and we didn’t rebound well.”
Despite the problems, Jenkins saw a lot of progress among her players. “We ran our offense very well and the girls really looked for each other.”
In spite of their offensive coordination, the Panthers just couldn’t penetrate through the long arms of the Tiger ladies, most notably Kimmy Hopkins.
