Country Sampler’s January 2006 issue, currently on the newsstands, includes the collections of four Rappahannock County residents in its annual feature on the year’s Ten Hottest Collectibles
Each year, the magazine asks Esther and Franklin Schmidt, regular contributors, to select, photograph and write about those collections, from around the U.S. that they deem most appealing to collectors and dealers. The Schmidts say they were fortunate to have found so many of their choices this close to home.
This year’s collections included pieces from Castleton resident, Tanya Vacek’s antique sad irons and antique scales and Pete Cecere’s groupings of washboards, commercial boxes, face containers and model boats. Tanya Vacek, a longtime resident of Castleton, has been collecting primitives and folk art for many years. Many examples of Pete Cecere’s collections have been donated to museums throughout the southwest and are on exhibit in those venues. The Schmidts photographed and wrote about their own collections of antique and vintage marbles, enamelware and advertising letters.
