had been moving quickly. I made a mental note to tell the landowner about the coyotes.

In another 20 minutes, and by now it was probably about 7:30 a.m., I caught a slight movement in the brush off to my left. The sun had broken through the clouds, and the movement was directly under the sun. I pulled the brim of my hat down and squinted and strained my eyes. What I saw was a yearling, feeding on honeysuckle. I watched and waited, and in another five minutes, I could also make out the doe. They were moving north, along a brush line, and though they were only about 120 yards away, I still had trouble seeing them clearly because of the sun.

After a bit, they worked themselves still further up the brush line, and I could see them better, but now, the cedar tree was hiding them. I very carefully got up and, keeping the tree between me and the deer, eased around on the upper side. By this time, they had made out my movement, and were locked in' on me, but still weren’t too sure if they should be concerned or not. I eased the gun up. An easy shot.

But, I had already made my jerky, the bologna this year turned out really well, and I had just about enough burger in the freezer to keep my domestic partner happy for pretty near the whole year. I watched them. Then, they both jerked their heads back in the direction from which they had come, and I thought, there has to be a buck back there. How now black cow?
