Uplifting! lb us, this has always described the feeling evoked by Rappahannock County’s historically Black churches. Everything about them seems to have an infectious joy. The preachers, the congregations, the old folks, the children, the music, oh that music, and even and perhaps especially, the food: they all seem to raise the spirit to heavenly levels. This is nowhere more evident than in the incredible celebrations of life displayed at funerals. The atmosphere is always one of bright, almost lighthearted fervor not unlike that associated with those joyous ‘jazz’ funeral processions in New Orleans. Whether the soul-stretching cadences of the preacher, simultaneously universal, yet unique, or the strains of “When the Saints Go Marching In” or some other tune from the rich Black musical heritage, the net effect is, as we said, uplifting! The feet tap, the face grins, and the heart is relieved of its burdens, all in the midst of what would otherwise be just a sad occasion.
