“Promoter-vintners want to engage in anything they see fit, from rock concerts to mudwrestling,” Conaway wrote in a letter to the editor published in the Richmond Times-Dispatch and the Rappahannock News. “These extraneous activities would trash the reputation of Virginia wines along with the countryside and have a disastrous effect upon agriculture and communities.”
Allowing uncontrolled promotion will impact quality of life for residents, and break the model set by California’s successful wine industry, Conaway said.
Albo said he is willing to address the concerns of local government officials.
“We’ve been trying to work with local governments to make the bill better. Initially, they had a lot of problems with the bill,” he said.
The bill now goes to the Senate for consideration. It has been referred to the Senate Committee on Local Government
