1 he strange-looking (and otherwise very secretive) American woodcock has already begun its magical courtship ritual of strutting and “beeping” on the ground, followed by long, high, twittering spiral flights over open areas. The birds then fall to the ground, often to the same spot, to repeat the sequence. Their warbling, chirping songs, given as they plummet to Earth, are among the most beautiful sounds in nature.
Great homed owls are among the earliest of breeders. They mate, call, and lay eggs in winter. In our area, their eggs have no doubt already hatched.
