I he Kev. George Horner organized the First Baptist Church in Washington in 1876. The 45 initial members were baptized in the Rush River on the very day of its founding. They met in an old (White) church building on Wheeler Street for five years until the present church was constructed on the north end of Main Street. As with many AfricanAmerican churches built at this time, members Black lodges of the Independent Order of Oddfellows played an important part in the construction. In the case of First Baptist, it was the Luray lodge that laid the cornerstone of the building in 1881. In a free will offering at the time contributors placed their donations in the cornerstone.
