Money was on the minds of the Rappahannock County School Board at Tuesday’s monthly meeting. The Rappahannock County Public School preliminary, draft budget for the upcoming year was unveiled, and School Superintendent Dr. Robert Chappell briefed the board and spectators on its broad outlines. Overall, RCPS is planning on $11,856,131 for the upcoming year, up $648,299 or 5.78 percent from last year’s public school budget of $11,207,832.
Of that nearly $12 million dollars in expected total school spending, $8,100,014 is to come from the county coffers - an increase of almost $800,000 or 11 percent from last year’s coun* ty contribution of $7,301,519.
Three items make up most of the increase. Raises of between 1 1/2 percent and 3 1/2 percent for teachers and other school employees accounts for $237,791. Retirement plan and group life insurance premium hikes amount to $257,586, the largest increased expense. And
