Rev. Michael Tinsley and his flock enjoy one of the most picturesque locations for any Rappahannock church at Shiloh Baptist in Woodville, organized in 1873. In 1929 an additional two acres were added to the prominent hillside location making possible an equally beautiful cemetery. The hills are indeed alive at this spot not only with the sound of music during services, but also with the breathtaking panorama of the Blue Ridge.
Bethel Baptist Church (1870), currently without a minister of its own, was originally called the Amissville Colored Church. Its congregation likely met in homes and fields as well until in 1890 when a sanctuary, with adjoining cemetery, was constructed on the east side of RT 642. A new structure replaced the original on the other side of the road in 1963, using materials from the old building.
In a possible hint of the problems of the time, Hopewell Baptist in Sperryville was formed when 12 Blacks broke away from what today is Reynolds Memorial Baptist Church in 1873. Now guided by • associate pastor Anna AJlsberry, its first two buildings were on a hillside on RT 600 just above what is now US 211; the first burned, the second was built nearby and was used until 1962 when its facilities became inadequate for the congregation. That second building, now in private hands, remains. A new church on another hillside on the opposite side of 211 replaced these original structures.
