Tears rolled down the cheeks of some of Rappahannock County High School girls varsity basketball players Monday night.
Those tears meant the end of their 2005-06 Group A Bull Run District season, a 36-33 defeat at the hands of host Madison in the opening round of the district tournament.
But as painful as a loss can be, Lady Panthers head coach Rhonda Jenkins talked optimistically about next season, about seven returning players, including three starters who helped Rappahannock to its best record of 5-15 overall in many, many years.
“I’m not disappointed. These girls gave everything that they had,” Jenkins said. “We’re not going to rebuild. Next year we’re going to make some noise, and I think everyone in this district knows that.”
Rappahannock and Madison split their tightly played, regular season matchups. Monday night’s game proved no different. The lead changed hands eight times, the last time gave Madison a 32-30 lead with 3:56 left in overtime.
