The cars are cut from the unfinished blocks of pine using a powered or hand scroll saw , usually by the scout’s fathers or sponsors. After the shape of the vehicle has been cut, the cars are sanded, painted and given final touches.
And then they’re off! Cars of many different shapes and colors speed downward on the four lanes race track’s slope, using only three of the lanes.
The scouts raced against the other members of their dens with the fastest car from each den advancing to the Pack Championship race. Many heats were very close.
After the den races, it was time to determine which was the fastest car. The top placing car in each den took part in a final series of races. The slower cars were gradually eliminated and the faster ones remained in for the next round. Cheers and applause greeted the announcement of the final placings.
First place in the Pack Championship Race went to Ben Estes of Webelos 1, second place to Tristan Palme, of Webelos 1 and third place went to Gary Jenkins, a Bear scout. Each was awarded a trophy by Dan Bailey, Club Master.
The three fastest cars in each of the five dens are eligible to race in the Shenrapawa District Pinewood Derby in March.
Every competitor came out with a ribbon, even those who did not win receiving ribbons that say, “I did my best.”
