Mt Moriah (1888) lies on Poe’s Road (Rt 645) about two miles north of Amissville. Its current spiritual leader is Rev. Lemeul Montgomery.
Although it is now long gone, another Black church, Mt. Pleasant Baptist, was located in the Viewtown area around 1893. Speculation on one possible location is near the intersection of Rts 729 and 640, however there is also a possibility that it was located near the top of Battle Mountain, between those two routes.
Coming a little later than its sister churches was Promise Land Baptist in Gid Brown Hollow (RT 622 about a mile in from US 211) which had its organizational meeting in 1900. The church sanctuary dates from 1904.
Like its counterparts, among the many fine attributes of current pastor Rev Herbert Johnson’s congregation is a wonderful choir.
