an enormous price sorting through the issues of their time. Many, many of Rappahannock’s young men saw *the elephant’, some for eternity, while those who remained at home endured the furious contortions of that metaphoric beast. The sifting of the issues they fought over is, even now, incomplete, but there is little doubt that what they experienced left us a stronger and more united county, state, and country and a rich heritage. May we never forget what they did for us and, in doing so, may we strive to ensure that our descendents will somehow be spared the conflicts like those of the past and present. Elephants and gardens have never mixed all that well, whatever the locale.
NOTE: John Tble submitting a grant application to the state Department of Transportation (VDOT) for funds to erect a number of Virginia Civil War Trails roadside markers to commemorate some of the people and events of this period. The proposal also includes funds for construction of a visitor information kiosk to provide orientation to both our history and the tourist amenities (lodging, food, arts, etc) available in the county, thus linking our past and future in a manner consistent with the goals of the County Comprehensive Plan.
