that prospect is not so likely tor most of us, at least for now. Had we been bom some 150 odd years earlier however, we would have had the compelling, unavoidable, and completely local opportunity to get up front and personal with *the elephant’ of war in all its fury. Conflict comes here

Rappahannock County, with its bucolic landscape and quiet pace of life, may seem especially and eternally isolated from realities transpiring elsewhere. It’s difficult, no... well nigh impossible to imagine that anything more conflicted than picking the prettiest apples or the freshest lettuce, selecting a painting or print from some rustic gallery, or choosing between the ’03 and ’04 vintage at one of the local wineries could ever interrupt our gentle flow of life. But once upon a time, dear children, the fairytale existence of this place was upset to its bedrock by the great upheaval of a bloody conflict. Hardship, sacrifice, and sorrow there were in ample supply. War, not the style portrayed by Madison Avenue or Hollywood, but the real thing, the hellish brute envisioned by Sherman, landed in the midst of this quiet comer of Virginia.
