Just when he found himself on the brink of musical success, his world fell apart. Mary passed away from aplastic anemia, a rare disorder that limits the bone marrow’s production of blood cells. The disease generally strikes people in their 30s and 40s, but is often curable.
“I was so buried in the release of my CD, I didn’t see (her death) coming,” Benyo said. “Mom did so much for me. She never really got a chance to listen to all of my songs.”
Reeling from Mary’s death, Benyo packed up his belongings and the life he knew. He headed to Castleton to live with his dad Bob, step-mother Amy and brothers Patrick and Christopher and enroll as a sophomore at Rappahannock County High School.

Music always has been paramount in the Benyo family. His mother played the clarinet. His aunt, his mother’s sister, Ann, not only sings but also plays the flute, guitar and piano. If she did not entertain the family, then Benyo did.
