In the case of actual armed conflicts, modem control and manipulation of information at all levels shields our gentle sensitivities from almost all of the horror, suffering, and grief of those wearing the actual boots, shoes, or sandals, or other footwear on, or anywhere near, the actual killing grounds. The little we do see or hear blends with and is diluted by the inanity and banality of popular culture and the irrational distortions of public discourse. Perhaps the inhumanity and insanity of war would ring more true were we all a little closer to the action, though
