As a pediatric nurse, I was intrigued by a recent opportunity to observe firsthand how the Child Care and Learning Center (CCLC) meets the needs of families. We arrived at nap time, entering rooms filled with the echo of soothing music and a delightful array of cherubic faces. Most of the children remained asleep, but a curious few peeked out from beneath their covers.
The Center is a warm, nurturing environment in which participants are encouraged to develop their creative minds and acquire practical skills. This goal is accomplished through the use of several ‘play areas’, including a trunk of costumes for dramatic play, a corner for woodworking, a building area, a homemaker’s room, and an office center. The children’s exposure to such varied experiences is certain to broaden their horizons, as well as offer valuable skills for future jobs. And it was most refreshing to witness a learning institution that continues to value the teaching of the arts.
