1976. At that time, the center was known as “Sursum Corda”, meaning ‘lift up your hearts’. Since then, it has functioned as the only permanent childcare facility in Rappahannock County, and is currently the only accredited day care within a 10 county radius.
And, thanks to the center’s Director, Rose Ann Sharp, it became the first program in the nation to integrate Head Start (a free preschool program for children of low income families) into a private day care setting.
As a result, in Rappahannock County, Head Start preschool children are integrated into the same preschool classroom as their more affluent peers. CCLC is a full-time childcare center that also offers summer and after school programs. The Center welcomes all children aged three weeks through thirteen years. Unfortunately, only 66% of the Center’s costs are covered by tuition. The remainder of its income is dependent on grants, donations to an annual fund drive at Thanksgiving, and proceeds from the annual Fall Auction & Party. This
