For most people it’s the changing leaves that they most associate with fall. We’ve found that here in Rappahannock County there are other signs that catch our attention. The hummingbirds have deserted our feeder in search of warmer weather. The deer are busily loading up on acorns. We’re loading up on apples and apple cider from the local orchards. We’ve just had our first fire in the wood stove. And, like many of you, we’ve begun our annual fall fight with the bears over who really owns our bird feeders!
It’s national Fire Prevention Week. Fire Prevention Day began in 1920 and became Fire Prevention Week in 1922. The reason we observe it on this particular week is that this week is the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. That fire killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and eventually burned more than 2,000 acres. But historians now believe that Mrs. O’Leary’s cow has been unfairly blamed for starting the fire.
In honor of Fire Prevention Week the Amissville Volunteer Fire Department is holding an open house at the fire hall on Saturday, October 14th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This is your chance to see for yourself what these local volunteers do for us all. There will be tours of the station and a chance to see all the cool equipment up close. Safety demonstrations for both adults and children are planned, as well as a demonstration of cutting open a vehicle in a rescue situation. Other children’s activities include a
