He taught courses and worked with students at the McLean, Va. campus, Gibbons said.
Tb help with the volume of essays, Gibbons’ partner, Diana Bennett, also worked diligently over the past four years to help bring tne project to fruition, she said.
She said the women shared an appreciation for his work, and tried to edit as lightly as possible to keep with Trott’s conversational style.
“[Trott] was so wonderful, and everybody just loved the articles,” said Gibbons. She said the book is divided into four sections - dividing the essays into four seasons to group similar themes for readers.
“It’s entertaining, and it’s short enough that you can pick up the book and read essays in 10-15 minutes,” she said. One of her favorite sections discusses what to do when squirrels attack, she said with a laugh.
Tb illustrate the book, Gibbons enlisted the help of Reva, Va. resident Nicky Staunton for the drawings. Staunton, a board member of the Virginia Native Plant Society, said she was familiar with Trott’s reputation and was excited about the chance to be involved.
“He had such an appreciation for the simple things you see everyday, the things you see as you drive along the road,” she said.
