Photographs by Richard Lykes THE HOSTESS: Sandra Cartwright-Brown, left, guides a tour of members through Conyers House B&B. handsome horses, eleven fireplaces and ten porches, beautiful stone walls and gardens, and an unpretentious but elegant atmosphere. Five course meals also are served to guests by prior arrangements in a large and gracious dining room. The old building’s “pedigree” begins at, a country store in the early 1800s; later it became a private home—even housing some hippies for a while in the 1960s, and then was transformed into a B&B by the Cartwright-Browns. The Rappahannock Historical Society, organized in 1965, serves its members— and all residents and visitors—as an educational institution devoted to promoting knowledge of the past for a better understanding of the future. Its archives include many original source documents such as county and census records dating from the late 1790s. Its museum also has an archive of artifacts and photographs useful to researchers.
