Sfunuel Marvin was sentenced to 12 ywrs»in jail for sexual abuse and finw $1,000 for fraud in separate court cases concluded Friday and Wednesday.

12 years In jail

Judge Frank A. Hoff Jr. Wednesday sentenced Samuel Marvin to 12 years in jail for sexually abusing a child. In March of this year, a jury found Marvin guilty of <me charge of indecent liberties with a child and one charge of aggravated sexual assault and battery with a child under the age of 13.

At the March trial the jury recommended a sentence of 16 years in jail. Judge Hoff yesterday followed the jury’s recommendation, but suspended four years of the 16-year sentence.

Once released, Marvin will be subject to four years supervised probation requiring that he:

• enroll in a sex offender treatment program and receive polygraph tests,

• have no contact with the victim,

•have no unsupervised contact with minors,

• remain drug and alcohol free,

• obtain any drug and alcohol abuse treatment recommended by his probation officer,

• not loiter within 100 feet of schools or daycare centers,

• pay restitution for counseling expenses far the victim, and

• register as a sex offender.

Marvin has the right to appeal the court’s decision.

“My main concern is that she just be given enough time to grow up,” the victim’s mother said at the sentencing.

She hoped that Marvin’s jail sentence would provide the victim time to mature and heal.

She also testified that she exhausted the $2,365 provided by the state for victim counseling, but planned to continue treatment for the victim. She said the psychologist the victim is seeing charges $85 per hour.

At the March trial, the victim testified that Marvin had taken baths with her and made her wash his “private area.” She said that Marvin had
