Newman earns champion honors
Middleburg resident Katherine Newman, 16, was high junior jumper champion at the Hampton Classic Horse Show this past week in New York. She showed her Holsteiner stallion, Costa Sur. Early in August, Katherine and Costa Sur were junior individual gold medalists at the the North American Young Rider Championships in Lexington. Two weeks later in Lexington, Newman won the VHSA Medal on Almelo, owned by Mimi AbelSmith from Middleburg.
Volunteers sought
The Golden Dreams Therapeutic Riding Center in Middleburg wiD host a volunteer and friend picnic next Saturday, Sept. 15 at the center at Baileywyck Farm. There will be volunteer training from 10 a.m.-12 pm., followed by a picnic The program is seeking volunteers (horse experience is helpful but not required), students, donations and more. New Rita Mae Brown thriller
The sixth entry in the Jane “Sister” Arnold series by best-sellrng author Rita Mae Brown arrives Sept. 27 with a book signing at Horse Country Saddlery in Warrenton. Parts of "The TfeU-Tale Horse” take place in Warrenton and at the saddle shop.
Brown started the Oak Ridge Fox Hunt, based near Charlottesville, and serves as master and huntsman. She also founded the Piedmont Women’s Fblo Club.
