Guilty of fraud Samuel Marvin and Rappahannock resident Virginia Cloud pleaded guilty to misdemeanor fraud in Rappahannock County Circuit Court Friday, Aug. 31. The charges stemmed from an incident in which they provided false information to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles to obtain a title to a motorcycle. Judge Thomas Home fined each $1,000. Marvin and Cloud faced felony conspiracy and fraud charges, which carried a maximum sentence of five years in the Department of Corrections or 12 months in jail and a $2,500 fine. Those charges were reduced in a plea agreement reached that morning. In a phone interview, prosecuting attorney Peter Luke said his evidence showed that Marvin and Cloud provided false information to obtain the title to a 1999 . Harley Davidson motorcycle that Marvin had owned. According to Luke, Marvin gave the motorcycle to his wife but wanted it back after she decided to sell it. On July 17, Cloud acquired a duplicate title to the motorcycle, and Marvin later signed it over to her. Cloud then picked up the motorcycle from Route 211 in Sperryville, where it was for sale. The whole time, Marvin’s wife had the true title to the motorcycle, Luke said. Judge Home ordered the motorcycle to be re-conveyed to Marvin’s wife. E-mail the reporter at mpelkey@timespapers.tMm.
