But in the fourth quarter, the Panthers began to climb back into the contest.
Rappahannock took their first possession of the fourth quarter and drove 44 yards as Stokes, Fitzmorris, and Dodson combined for 36 yards rushing on the possession. Fitzmorris ended the drive with his second touchdown run of the game from two yards out to make it 21-14 with 6:50 remaining.
The Panthers defense held on the succeeding possession, forcing Luray to punt, RCHS senior Hugo Ramirez broke through the offensive line on the punt and was able to get his hand on the ball. The blocked punt set up Rappahannock near midfield on their final drive.
That’s when the Panthers came up a mere foot short, and were saddled with an opening-night loss.
The Panthers finished with 202 yards of total offense, while Luray had 282 yards of offense. Fitzmorris led RCHS with 42 yards on 10 carries, while VanWycek paced the Bulldogs with 99 yards rushing.
Next up for RCHS is a home contest against Hancock at 2 PM Saturday.
“When you put yourself in position to win ball games, eventually your going to get a win,” Coach Williams said. “After tonight, there’s hope in the hills of Rappahannock County.”
