While there have been a few downpours of late, it hasn’t been enough to quench the thirst of hungry crops in this area. County administrator John McCarthy was copied on a letter authored by Senator Mark D. Obenshain which will hopefully bring some relief
On Tuesday, Sept. 4, Sen. Obenshain (R-Harrisonburg) sent a letter to Governor Tim Kaine requesting his support for Rappahannock County’s designation for Federal drought-relief assistance.
In the letter, Sen. Obenshain detailed the reality of droughtrelated crop losses in Virginia and within Rappahannock County. According to some estimates, hay and pasture yields have been decreased by 40 percent as a result of drought in Rappahannock County.
“Many formers in Rappahannock County have been hit hard by a lack of significant rainfall in recent months and consequent decreased crop yields. I hope the Governor will agree that the need for drought assistance exists in Rappahannock County and will provide his support for Federal relief” said Obenshain who added that neighboring Warren County is also seeking designation for federal drought-relief assistance.
Obenshain added, “Many communities and families in Rappahannock County depend on agricultural production. This summer has proved very difficult for forms in my district and I am optimistic that this designation will assist those who have been most adversely affected by the ongoing drought.”
Obenshain represents Rappahannock County in the Virginia Senate, where he serves on the Agriculture Committee.
