Also, if Washington joined the commission, town officials could participate in planning discussions with other governments in the region. McCarthy found such opportunities to network with peers helpful. He said Rappahannock County’s abandoned vehicle program was modeled after a similar program in Culpeper.
To gain membership to the RRRC, the Washington Town Council would have to vote in favor of applying for membership and then send a formal letter to the commission indicating its desire to join. The commission would then have to vote whether to grant Washington membership. The next opportunity for the commission to decide whether to grant Washington membership is Oct. 24.
RRRC Executive Director Jeffrey Walker supports Washington’s interest in the commission.
“It’s informal at this point,’’ he said. “If it comes to pass that there is mutual agreement that this would be beneficial, we’re happy to proceed.”
Walker will present an overview of membership at the Washington Town Council meeting in October, providing time for the council to decide whether to join before the commission meets on Oct. 24.
Mayor Leggett said membership with the commission could be helpful.
“I think it sounds like a good idea, but I won’t know if it really is a good idea until we have had a meeting with the Town Council and Jeff Walker,” he said.
