Water, water everywhere has been the theme around our house of late. In my opinion 99.9 percent of the things that go wrong with a house revolve around water! That’s certainly been true in our houses over the years. So recently we spent time doing battle with clogged pipes. TO spare you the gory details about grease and glop. Since we’re the kind of people who like to believe we’re self-sufficient, there’s no plumber in sight.
Typically weekends this time of year are spent gathering the harvest! I love August when every flat surface in the house seems to be covered in tomatoes. It’s the time of year when we have tomatoes for three meals a day and eat more BLTs in a week than we do in most months the rest of the year. I’m my mother’s daughter and so I still put produce away to get us through the winter. From tomatoes we’ll get pureed tomatoes that will go into sauces, soups, stews and chilis later in the year. We’ll make spaghetti sauce as well that well use in all kinds of pasta as well as Eggplant Parmesan. Green beans get scalded and frozen. Zucchini will become all kinds of things!
But this year is a little different as we haven’t had a garden. We knew we were going to be away for several weeks this summer and our experience has been that gardens don’t thrive in your absence. Somehow our trips always correspond with the driest part of the summer and we come back to tall, healthy weeds and short, hied vegetable plants! And, so, we
