Hospice of the Rapidan periodically offers free training for people interested in becoming volunteers and has scheduled its next training program beginning Monday, September 10. This is a comprehensive program for people interested in volunteering with patients and their caregivers, and consists of a total of 21 hours, in seven 3 hour sessions. Those interested in volunteering with events, community outreach and in the office require less extensive training. Training will take place at the Orange County Nursing Home; 120 Dogwood Lane, Orange from 1:00-4:00 p.m. Mondays and Wednesday’s beginning Monday, September 10 and ending on Monday, October 3. There will be no class on Wednesday September 19. No prior experience is required and the program is free of charge. Hospice of the Rapidan has volunteer opportunities with patient families in Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock Counties and at its office in Culpeper. There is a particular need for volunteers in Orange County. Interested people should contact Ruth Pavlik, Volunteer Coordinator, at 540-825-4840 to sign up, and must complete an application process prior to the beginning of class.
Sept. 11: “Patriots Day”
at Reynolds Memorial
Reynolds Memorial Baptist Church in Sperryville will host on Tuesday, Sept. 11 from 6-8 p.m, a "Dinner, Memorial, Honor and Prayer" service for Rappahannock fire and rescue volunteers, law enforcement officers, retirees and their families. September 11 marks the sixth anniversary of terrorist attacks on U.S. soil-and the sixth year for the local, special event at Reynolds. "As a community we want to continue to acknowledge the sacrifices of first-responders in Rappahannock County," Jon Heddleston, pastor at Reynolds, said. "Patriot’s Day" provides a tangible way for us to remember September 11th together-and to thank those who serve here. The event begins with dinner out-of-doors on the church property located in Sperryville Village at 3948 Sperryville Pike. At 7:15 a "Memorial Dove Release" ceremony will recall victims of the 9/11 attacks. The Honor and Prayer service will follow from 7:30 to 8 p.m. The invitation is extended to first responders, their families and all retirees who currently are serving or who have served the various companies,units and departments in Rappahannock," Rev. Heddleston said. "We want the people who serve us 24/7 to come, be served, and know they're prayed for and appreciated."
