be as sloppy or quick as I want to be. At this stage I try not to think about what I am doing, but just have fun getting something down to respond to. Once that initial happy rush is over I try and keep that same energy but it becomes harder. Fm no longer responding to a white canvas. I have to consider what is there, what I want to keep and what I don’t, what color to use, where to add line. This is where the collage technique keeps me from getting too tight. At the same time that Fm painting on canvas I also paint on large sheets of paper which I randomly tear and cut apart to use as collage. It gives me a large choice of ideas that I can play around with until I commit it to the canvas with acrylic medium.
At some point with a work I usually become stuck. I like certain things about it but Tm afraid to change anything for fear of losing what I like. At this point it’s time to be ruthless, say “the heck with it!” and go back in with that initial energy and paint over parts of the work. It is not easy to make this decision but I have never regretted doing so because it’s usually at this point that a painting improves or even gets finished.
In the end I am standing in front of a painting that surprises me. I know what steps I went through to get there, but it was the painting itself that said “I am finished.” I’ve created something I really like through the process of discovery.”
