One of Toler’s favorite newsroom assignments was working with the rest of the staff on a series that dealt with volunteer organizations. Each writer spent a few days volunteering with a group, then wrote a story. Toler chose the Fauquier Free Clinic, and appreciated getting an insider’s perspective.
“You can take a press release or just do an interview about an organization, but there’s nothing like seeing it work or being a part of it to get a feel for what they do,” he said.
Toler said he also enjoyed being involved in the building of the Veterans’ Memorial on Hospital Hill, and his efforts that led to Fauquier County being recognized as a Korean War Commemoration Community from 2000-03. “These projects
