Wakefield Country Day School’s cross country coach has a problem, and he didn’t see it coming: he doesn’t have enough uniforms for his team. Mike Kenney has four girls’ apd four boys’ uniforms, but he has ten runners. Last year he had just one.
‘That’s a good problem to have — to need more uniforms,” Kenney said.
With ten runners, Wakefield’s varsity.program will for the first time since 2003 meet the Delaney Athletic Conference’s four-member requirement to qualify as a team, Kenney said. The runners will have a chance to show their mettle Sept. 13 at their first meet, and last week they laced up their shoes and hit the trail in preparation.
Kenny said he typically has the team run a few laps around the school’s nearly mile-long cross country course. Another favorite is a sprint across a field and then up a hill, which prepares the runners for rolling terrain in competitions. But Kenney likes to vary his training regiments.
