to pass on. Major conferences have started to bite the hand that feeds the mouth and have decided to stomp on their only feeder system -high school football.
This year, the Big East, Big 12, WAC, MAC, and Mountain West conferences will all have teams featured on ESPN’s Friday Night Football. And some games - for instance the match-up between West Virginia and South Florida - actually have some intrigue. That could mean a lesser number of fans and dollars at high school stadiums, and more viewers and more money in the bank for ESPN.
In 1964, NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle flirted with the idea of televising an NFL game of the week on Friday nights. But Rozelle and his colleagues had respect for the Friday night tradition and decided to search for another opportunity to showcase the NFL’s game of the week. Thus was the birth of Monday Night Football.
Hey ESPN, Tuesday and Wednesday nights are free, but leave Friday’s alone.
Playing high school football games on Friday nights is one of America’s longest and most storied traditions. And we should do everything in our power to keep it that way.
