made the seemingly sensible solution to give it up this year. But I have to admit to missing all that abundance right outside my back door. And so I’m haunting the farmers markets. I head to any roadside vegetable stand or farm with a sign up front indicating they’ve got vegetables for sale. Rappahannock County is a wonderful place to live as you’re trying to find all these fresh vegetables. A recent dinner included a chicken we raised ourselves and green beans from a local farmers market. And another evening the pot roast on our table included beef from Adams Custom Slaughter, potatoes from Muskrat Haven Farm here in Amissville and carrots and onions from Roy’s Orchards in Sperryville.
Labor Day gave us a day off and I’ve been thinking about all those people who are still engaged in hard physical labor every day. I’m not sure we appreciate those people enough in a society that seems to value how much you make more than what you actually produce! So a big thank you to all the farmers, mechanics, craftsmen, nurses, construction workers and others who perform all that backbreaking labor so I don’t have to. In a world full of digital everything, we still couldn’t get along without you.
