On Friday morning in Rappahannock County Circuit Court, Judge Jeffrey Parker will tell Ira Wayne Cloniger what his punishment is for taking the life of another man.
More than 14 months after Cloniger stabbed his friend Edward Carlton Fletcher Jr. in Gid Brown Hollow, it is time for the 44-year-old man's sentencing. Cloniger attacked the 2^-year-oId man after Cloniger's girlfriend, Helen Pierce, said Fletcher had raped her.
In January, a jury declared Cloniger guilty of first-degree murder for killing Fletcher in the earlymorning hodrs of July 2, 2006. The jury recommended a life sentence.
Friday is the third date that haa been scheduled for C hunger's sentencing. It was originally slated for April 19, but then was delayed until June 22. When that day came, public defender Bonnie Hoffman filed a motion to declare the case a mistrial.
Hoffman claimed the jury may have been influenced by mwmsnh made by Fletcher's uncle, Kelvin Carbaugh, during a lunch break on the second day of the three-day triaJL
The mistrial motion was rejected on July 20, when Hoffman said none of the jurors reported hearing Carbaugh's remarks. Sentencing was rescheduled for 9 a m on Friday.
Cloniger is being held at the Page County Jail while he awaits sentencing.
