Aleta led the students through the vine rows. Her impromptu lectures were punctuated by bird cries, which she said were recorded of distress calls intended to scare off winged grape nibblers. To keep out fourlegged thieves, an eight-foot high fence surrounds the grapevines, she told the students. ^ Even with the precautions, some intruders help themselves to a feast.
“Anybody want to fry this one up for dinner?” Aleta asked the class, holding up a corpulent horn worm the size of man's finger.
Plucking a grape from the vine, Aleta bit it open.
“When the seeds are brown, that’s an indicator it’s ripe,’ she said.
