This is the first in an irregular series of reviews of books that are likely to appeal to or particularly relate to the Rappahannock reader.
“Animal, Vegetable, Miracle” offers the reader “A Year of Food Life.” Barbara Kingsolver, an award-winning novelist, applies her writing skills to an account of “eating locally.” She describes her family’s decision to move from Tucson, Arizona, to an old farm, nestled in the Appalachians, in, yes, the state of Virginia. While the farm is located southwest of our county, her experiences and reflections relate quite closely to those of Rappahannock residents.
Ms. Kingsolver, her husband, and her two teen-aged daughters commit to eating locally; that is, they will acquire almost all that they eat from within a 50 mile radius.
