Annual auction in October

The 16th annual MARE Center Thoroughbred yearling auction is set Sunday, Oct. 14 at the Middleburg Agricultural Research and Extension Center.

Twenty-two Jockey Club-registered fillies and geldings will be sold. Proceeds benefit equine nutrition research at the center.

A seminar entitled “Managing Healthy Growth , and Development in Young Horses” will be taught at the Middleburg center Oct. 19 from 9 a.m.-4 pan. The cost is $25 par person.

Poland, ‘Candidate’ Min in Texas

Warrenton veterinarian Dr. Helen Roland and her Quarter Horse gelding The Prime Candidate won prizes in the hunter division at the American Quarter Horse Association’s Select World Championships in Texas. The Select show is open to qualified riders 50 and over.

The sixth annual Junior North American Field Hunter Championships runs SepL 29-Nov. 4 at five Virginia hunt dubs (and one in Maryland), with the grand finale at Old Whitewood in The Plains.

Juniors are invited to hunt Sept. 29 with Potomac Hunt in Maryland, Oct 6 with Old Dominion Hounds in Flint Hill, Oct. 7 with Thornton Hill in Sperryville, Oct. 8 with Blue Ridge in Berryville, Oct. 13 with Warrenton Hunt and Oct. 14 with the MOC Beagles at Glenwood Park in Middleburg.

Judges hunt along with both the first flight and hilltopping contestants, judging on manners, etiquette and turnout.

Spectators and cartoppers are encouraged to attend the hunt days, and, especially, the Nov. 4 finals at Old Whitewood. Details are at (540) 364-4573.

New Cinnamon Ridge series

Working off the success of their recently completed summer show series, Cinnamon Ridge Farm in Amissville will host a Fall Baik Into Schooling series this month and next. Shows are slated Sept. 29, Oct. 13 and Oct 27. Classes range from small fry to open hunter. The Oct. 27 show is a fall festival with all regular divisions plus costume classes and games.
