Wallace said one or two posts are normally lost each year in Virginia. Most posts that fold voluntarily turn in their charters because of a lack of participation or consolidate with a larger post nearby, he said.
When a post’s charter is revoked, the YEW’S state headquarters takes possession of all property and money.
“That money does not belong to the individuals. The account is in the VFWs name. ... They’re not entitled to it,” Newberry said.
The state VFW department would probably assume some sort of responsibility for any property owned by the VFW, Newberry said. They might be forced to sell the property and building, he added.
Members pay annual or lifetime dues to join the VFW. “The members don’t lose their membership,” Wallace said.
County Administrator John McCarthy said he was worried about potential effects Post H50’s situation could have on the Sperryville Volunteer Rescue Squad, which shares the Main Street building with the VFW.
