even conclude that putting the line underground as they commonly do in Europe would be less expensive overall as well, but we have another proposal.
There are a lot of people in this town, this county, this region who are struggling to make ends meet; struggling just to pay their basic necessities, to get to work despite the higher gas prices, and to afford basic health insurance. They will not benefit from a bigger power line. In fact, if utility rate hikes become necessary to pay for this battle, it will only make matters worse.
There are all kinds of alternative energy systems available now that would totally eliminate the need for any further power line expansions. Solar electric, micro-hydro and gasification are only a few of the options already up and running and being used in many communities throughout the nation.
Dominion is an energy company and has the means to be a leader in this field. Not only could it make a lot of money promoting alternative energy, but the resulting jobs would put more money in everyone’s pockets, which will help all other businesses survive and grow. It would be a win-win situation where everyone benefits. Dominion would be making money now, not just from alternative energy, but by saving money from not fighting a lengthy battle over this unnecessary power line. It would also earn the respect and gratitude of the community, and not have to fight the image of being a corporate bully intent on making money at someone else’s expense.
We urge the SCC to deny this power line proposal, but more than that, we encourage Dominion Power to do the right thing; help itself and help the citizens with a better energy solution.
